Federal cases are often built quietly for months before anyone is arrested. If agents have contacted you, served a subpoena, or executed a search warrant, the decisions you make now matter.

Federal Cases Move Differently.

Federal criminal matters arising in Houston are generally heard in the Houston Division of the Southern District of Texas, not the Harris County criminal courts. The charging document and assigned court determine the procedure. We discuss the court, counsel requirements, and next deadlines during the consultation rather than treating a federal investigation like a state misdemeanor.

Federal prosecutions are handled by the United States Attorney's Office and investigated by agencies such as the FBI, DEA, HSI, IRS Criminal Investigation, and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service. By the time charges are filed, the government has frequently gathered bank records, phone extractions, recorded calls, and cooperating witness statements.

The process has its own stages: the investigation and any grand jury subpoenas, the indictment or criminal complaint, an initial appearance and detention hearing, discovery, pretrial motions, plea discussions, trial, and, if there is a conviction, sentencing under the advisory U.S. Sentencing Guidelines. Each stage offers different opportunities to protect your position.

Our approach is methodical. We review how evidence was obtained, whether searches and warrants were lawful, whether statements were voluntary, and whether the government can actually prove each element, including intent. We explain your options plainly, including the risks and tradeoffs of any path, so you can make informed decisions. No lawyer can promise an outcome, and we will not.

Federal Matters We Defend

What We Handle

Pre-Charge Investigations

Target letters, agent interviews, and knock-and-talks. Early counsel can help you avoid damaging statements and, in some cases, shape how the government views the matter before any charging decision.

Grand Jury Subpoenas

Subpoenas for documents or testimony carry real obligations and real risks. We assess your status, respond appropriately, and protect privileges where they apply.

Federal Drug Offenses

Conspiracy and distribution allegations that often rely on wiretaps, informants, and drug quantity attribution. We scrutinize each of those foundations closely.

Federal Firearms Charges

Felon-in-possession, straw purchase, and possession in connection with another offense. We examine possession theories, prior-conviction elements, and search legality.

Conspiracy Allegations

Conspiracy charges can sweep in people with limited roles. We test whether there was a genuine agreement and what you actually knew or intended.

Detention & Sentencing Advocacy

Arguing for release conditions at the detention hearing and, where relevant, presenting a full and accurate picture of you and the facts at sentencing.

Where Your Case Lives

State Court or Federal Court?

The same conduct can be investigated by Harris County authorities, federal agencies, or both. Which system holds the case changes the rules, the timeline, and the decisions you need to make early.

  • Prosecuted by the Harris County District Attorney's Office
  • Magistration and bond typically happen shortly after arrest
  • Misdemeanors in County Criminal Courts at Law; felonies in District Courts

Federal (Southern District of Texas)

  • Investigated by agencies such as the FBI, HSI, IRS-CI, or DEA
  • Prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney's Office
  • Cases often build quietly through subpoenas, interviews and target letters
  • Sentencing is shaped by the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines
